Note the revised plan at the URL that you mention:
bq. Revised Plan – Support for the path-style model continues for buckets
created on or before September 30, 2020. Buckets created after that date must
be referenced using the virtual-hosted model.
I suppose this makes the transition a bit easier, even if it doesn't remove the
need to change the access URLs.
