The idea to do this incrementally sounds good; in particular if that means that 
we can get id of the patched copy of 4.7.2.

But then there'll be multiple steps to get to a recent version; will the same 
approach work a s well?

And how well will this work in running instances; feedback from indexing team 
is needed here.
