Hello everyone! As this is my first time posting on this list, I feel it
polite to introduce myself. My name is Anthony Burns, and I am a connoisseur
of all things software engineering related.
Over the course of my deployment to Iraq this year, I plan to use my
downtime to work towards my vision of creating an application lifecycle
management platform (e.g. Trac, CollabNET, SourceForge.net, etc.) that can
be placed into today's evolving palette of distributed social networks. I
feel that it's time for the online software engineering community to start
taking advantage of the enhanced phenomena of collaboration and
communication that social networks provide.
My vision for this is to create a web-based, drop-in application like Trac,
with features supporting application lifecycle management such as a wiki,
issue tracker, repository browser, etc. With this in place, social
networking features can be added that can support the tasks normally
associated with such an application:
- Tagging of content such as repository revisions, issues in the
tracker, wiki pages, etc.
- Using OpenID and OAuth to facilitate SSO and data portability
between different sites that use the application.
- Use of rating/vote systems to prioritize user stories and bugs.
- An information dashboard with statuscasting that can integrate
into IDEs such as Eclipse.
- Any number of other possibilities enabled by social networking
features that would benefit collaborative development.
I am not deploying to Iraq as a software engineer, but rather as an infantry
soldier. Hopefully my downtime as such will be enough for me to continue
actively discussing this project and the concepts surrounding it over the
coming year. But I will still strive to become an active member of the
evolving discussion on open authentication and data portability. I thank you
all for any ideas and criticisms you may have about my vision for this
project.
