I've been doing moderation of this list as well — and I can tell you that — across the several dozen lists that I moderate — spam and abuse have become serious issues for Google Groups.
I support the first-post member moderation policy, but it does require vigilance and attentiveness, so if there are willing members, I second Eran's calls for volunteers. Doesn't take more than a couple minutes a day.
