Saturn Riders Open Tour of the Gila on a Strong Note

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- It is almost dj vu all over again. After the
15.7-mile prologue time trial that opened the 15th annual Tour of the Gila
in Silver City, N.M., Wednesday, Saturn cyclists Kim Bruckner and Lyne
Bessette rest in second and third place behind Canadian Genevieve Jeanson.

The three were the early leaders of the Redlands Bicycle Classic in
mid-March, only disaster befell Bessette on the second day when she crashed
and broke her right collarbone. Jeanson went on to win the California race
and Bruckner was second.

Wednesday marked Bessette's return to racing after spending six weeks
on the sidelines, and she is eager to pick up where she left off in March as
both she and Jeanson hail from Quebec. The 26-year-old finished 1:30 minutes
behind Jeanson, who clocked the fastest time at 38:46 minutes over the hilly
and windy out-and-back course with an elevation of 6,340 feet at its highest
point. Bruckner, who lives in Boulder, Colo., at an altitude of 5,430 feet,
had no trouble with the thin air and was second, 1:12 behind the leader.

Resting in fourth place is another Saturn rider, world number
one-ranked Anna Millward of Australia, 1:59 back, while her teammate and
fellow Australian Kristy Scrymgeour is eighth at 3:07.

In the men's race, unofficially Canadian Eric Wohlberg leads the
Saturn charge in second place behind Scott Moninger, a Mercury team rider
from Boulder. Moninger finished in 34:57 and Wohlberg was at 35:21 followed
by his teammate Matt DeCanio at 36:21. Trent Klasna, currently ranked No. 1
in the U.S., rests in fifth at 36.34.

Wednesday's race is the first of five stages in the high plateau of
southwestern New Mexico. Thursday's racing features a 92-mile effort for the
men with 5,650 feet of climbing. The women will have a 70-mile event and
4,530 feet of climbing. The Tour of the Gila continues through Sunday, May
6.
