Saturn's Millward Retains World Cup Lead in Montreal plus...
Teutenberg and Rossner One-Two at the Capital Cup.
MONTREAL -- Canadian Genevieve Jeanson was the local hero Saturday,
but Saturn's Anna Millward retained possession of the World Cup leader's
jersey following the 100-kilometer Montreal World Cup race, the fifth of
nine international events.
Jeanson won in the same fashion she has throughout the season --
alone. The 19-year-old attacked on the third of 12 laps in Montreal's
Mont-Royal and rarely looked back, finishing in 2 hours, 44 minutes and 45
seconds. Her closest chasers, Sweden's Susanne Ljungskog and Saturn's Lyne
Bessette, were 7:26 minutes behind.
By finishing eighth, Millward collected 18 points, giving her 218
total after five races. Her closest chaser in the overall standings, Mirjam
Melchers of The Netherlands, won a bunch sprint for fourth place Saturday,
gaining 30 points. Melchers now has 195 points total, and trails Millward by
23 going into next week's First Union Liberty Classic in Philadelphia.
Jeanson's attack was no surprise and by the halfway point she had a
gap of over four minutes, which continued to grow with each successive lap.
Bessette, from nearby Knowlton, Quebec, and fresh off her overall
title in the Tour de l'Aude in France, did give chase in the when Jeanson
initially broke away, but she also had to conserve energy to thwart off any
attacks by anyone looking to overtake Millward in the overall standings.
"Lyne rode an excellent race in support of Anna's jersey," said Giana
Roberge, assistant general manager for the Saturn Cycling Team. "In essence,
this is like a stage race with nine stages and today's primary objective was
to protect Anna's lead."
Millward and Bessette plus their teammate Kimberly Bruckner, the newly
crowned American national champion in the time trial and road race, were
part of a chase group of eight containing an impressive list of
contenders -- Melchers, Jeannie Longo (FRA), Susanne Ljungskog (SWE), Ceris
Gilfillan (GBR) and Cindi Pieters (BEL). On the penultimate lap, Bessette
and Ljungskog attacked, with the Swedish rider taking second.
In Washington, D.C., Ina Teutenberg and Petra Rossner won the Capital
Cup, a warm-up event for next week's Liberty Classic, which Rossner has won
four times since 1996.
The Saturn Cycling Team will now regroup in Philadelphia for the
week's festivities leading up to the First Union series of races that
culminates with the USPRO Championship and Liberty Classic on Sunday, June
10.
