I agree with both of these replies.  I own both types of bike and while 
the touring bike with racks, triple cranks, mudguards and braze-ons is my 
vehicle of choice for pannier touring, I really love my 'converted' 
cross-bike for a 'sportier' ride.  A spare set of wheels with alternate 
gearing and fatter tires converts the cross-bike to a perfect fire-road 
or rail-trail bike.
