I have to disagree. I do not think the original message was well written at
all. Everyone has a writing style but please lets refrain from using words
like "engines spewing their pollutants" . Engines might spew oil on the
road but in my mind they release pollutants.

So if I was to spend 2 minutes rewriting the statement it might go like this

" Mayor Chiarelli & Councillor Arnold,

As you are aware the City of Ottawa has issued a smog alert. Numerous
studies by Federal and Provincial Governments, Universities, and private
consultants conclude that exposure to smog is a health risk that can, in
certain cases, result in death.
A major contributor to smog is the use of vehicles powered by internal
combustion engines releasing waste products (pollutants) into the
atmosphere.

In order to try and avoid smog alerts I ask that the City of Ottawa take a
proactive role in smog prevention through furthering existing initiatives
and developing new ones.

Suggestions include:
1) Bike racks on more OC transpo routes
2) Bike racks at OC transpo stations where the current bike racks are
already full on a regular basis
3) Bike racks, near the attendants, in parking lots
4) Incentives for workplaces to provide facilities such as lockers and
showers for people commuting by bike, roller blades, running, etc
5) More bike racks in highly congested areas such as the market.
6) Increasing the awareness of vehicle use in the cause of smog and
promoting alternative methods of transportation.

With these measures in place it may be possible to avoid the following
warning

DURING THE EPISODE INDIVIDUALS MAY EXPERIENCE EYE IRRITATION.
HEAVY OUTDOOR EXERCISE MAY CAUSE RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS SUCH AS
COUGHING OR SHORTNESS OF BREATH. PEOPLE WITH HEART OR LUNG DISEASE
INCLUDING ASTHMA MAY EXPERIENCE A WORSENING OF THEIR CONDITION.

Ottawa, being the Nations Capital and thus a popular tourist destination
should take a proactive role in smog pervention through the implementaion of
these and other ideas. As the Kyoto Accord sits in limbo we cannot afford
to sit back and see what happens we have to protect our City and our tourist
industry by providing a clean and healthy environment.

Thanks,

Ross ( I wish I could afford a bigger box) Knight

Well said, Tom.
I would also like to see the Byward Market completely car-free since it's
such a great area to walk around. If truth be told, I would actually like
to see the whole downtown core car-free, with bus links only, but that may
be too much to ask!

I hope all you bike commuters get home safely tonight and don't forget to
rehydrate (the HO type)

Dear Mayor Chiarelli & Councillor Arnold,

We are having another smog alert. Smog not only makes people sick, it
can kill them. In large part, the smog is due to all the internal
combustion engines spewing their pollutants into the atmosphere.

Please promote cycling and public transit to reduce the smog.
How about bike racks on more long OCtranspo routes?
How about more bike racks, near the attendants, as part of every
parking lot?
How about lockers & showering facilities mandatory at every big
workplace?
How about more bike racks at OC transpo stations when the current
ones are already full?
How about more bike racks in the Market, and less parking spaces?
How about spending money promoting cycling rather than studying ring

roads?

Then we can avoid:
DURING THE EPISODE INDIVIDUALS MAY EXPERIENCE EYE IRRITATION.
HEAVY OUTDOOR EXERCISE MAY CAUSE RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS SUCH AS
COUGHING OR SHORTNESS OF BREATH. PEOPLE WITH HEART OR LUNG DISEASE
INCLUDING ASTHMA MAY EXPERIENCE A WORSENING OF THEIR CONDITION.

Unless we address this, we may all be wearing gas masks - or pushing
daisies up.

Thanks, Tom Trottier
