The same thing can be said about any serious car accident. "That person
would've survived if they'd been wearing a full coverage helmet and fire
retardant suit"  Many such serious accidents occur.  Does ANYONE wear such
safety equipment, other than race car drivers?
 
The point is that you take calculated risks.  Head on collisions when you
are a skilled cyclist are very rare.  Don't panic and think that we are all
going to get mowed down.  It's really quite safe out there if you use your
head.  
 
Having said that I wear a helmet.  And a seat belt - but not a full coverage
helmet.
