I recall a study that found cars equipped with air bags are also found to be
involved in more accidents - which adds weight to the argument that safety devices
increase risk-taking behaviour.
I don't like articles that quote cycling-related deaths and compare them to helmet
use without separating those deaths which were not the result of head injuries. In
other words, where it is possible that the helmet could have prevented the death. I
suspect that many cycling related deaths are the result of abdominal or trauma
injuries where a helmet would not have prevented death.
Another issue that I do not think was addressed in the article is whether there are
more cyclists on the road, which would cause an apparent increase in cycling
injuries.
It is unfortunate that many parents put their energies into getting politicians to
pass laws and engineers to design idiot-proof intersections and devices, instead of
putting their energies into properly training their children to ride their bikes.
Putting a kid on a Can-Bike course is probably a lot less effort. A lot more bang
for the buck too.
My two cents worth.
