Probably the shorter crank helps.  I read somewhere that essentially the
shorter the better, up to a point.  Also, a smaller frame will be stiffer,
so less of your effort will go into flexing the tubing and more will propell
the bike.  I certainly find my mtb is quite responsive and it has a very
small frame (and a correspondingly long seat tube).
