I think one lesson to be learned from Mr. Green's statements is that not
many of us are perfect. I know the rules of the road, and I know I should
be following them, but do I slow down and roll through a stop sign?
Sometimes. Do I ride 50 feet on the sidewalk to get to parent st from
pecco's? Sometimes. Could I be a better spokesperson for cycling in
Ottawa? Always. And I am sure I am not alone on this mailing list.
If there were bike law enforcement officers on the prowl, it would be a
purely positive thing. Those of us who know right from wrong would
be more diligent about riding appropriately; while those of us who aren't
quite as sure of our place or rights on the road would be taught.
And sleep well with this thought tonight: If Mr. Green sugested that the
city appoint bylaw officers to watch the behaivior of cyclists, he doen't
even realize that we are bound primatily by the highway traffic act, not the
municipality.
"Lookee heer Maw! I'm a jurnulist!"
