Hi folks,

I was at a meeting last week that also was attended by a Land Manager of
the NCC. He cleared up a couple of concerns that some of us at that
meeting shared about the Pathway rehabilitation west of the Champlain
Bridge.

Paul L. is correct, the NCC is rehabilitating the 'pedestrian only'
portion of the pathway between the Champlain Bridge and New Orchard
(just west of Woodroffe), north of the parkway but south of the river.
The NCC intends for what is currently a pedestrian only pathway to
become mixed use, like the rest of the surrounding path. There has often
been conflict between cyclists (and in-line skaters, scooters) and
pedestrians on this portion of the path along the river. Part of the
rationale behind designating this section for use by all pathway users
is the safety concern involved with non-pedestrian traffic having to
cross 4 lanes of parkway traffic to get over to the 'mixed use' portion
of the path, just west of Island Park Dr. The new path along the river
will be standard width, 3.0 metres. Currently it is 1.8 m wide, in
pretty rough shape and not easily accessible for mobility impaired
persons. Hopefully the expansion will spread the pathway traffic around
somewhat, allowing all users more space to share. Someone else mentioned
a concern over seniors who regularly walk on the north path and were
there enough benches on the path south of the parkway to accommodate
increased pedestrian traffic on that side? The NCC rep noted this and
assured us it would be investigated.

To address the other concern, neither cyclists nor pedestrians (or other
users) will lose use of the pathway south of the parkway. The NCC rep
reassured us that all users will continue to be able to access and use
this pathway & the parkway from the neighborhood residential streets.
Unfortunately, a rehabilitation of this portion of the pathway is not
scheduled for at least 2 more years, although I was told 2 years ago
that this portion would be repaved in 2 years! (Been riding on the road
ever since).

What I was also told is that the upcoming meetings on the 20th (5:00 and
7:00 pm) at the Unitarian Church are public information sessions only,
and this work will be going ahead as planned and scheduled. Hope this is
helpful. Again the NCC number for more info is 239-5555.
