Just a quick notice that the infamous Paris-Roubaix cyclo-sportif race will be held this Sunday April 21st). As you may know, the real Classic race is known as the hardest race on the pro circuit, our version is meant only to pay homage to that great race.
Registration is from 9:00-9:45am with a start at 10:00 am. The registration takes place at the Almonte Arena. We have secured the use of the foyer in the arena for registration and changing. Bathrooms will be open, and the showers are supposed available after the event, until 1:00pm - I do not want to guarantee this, but that is my understanding. You must have an approved cycling helmet to ride the event! Need directions to Almonte - get a map. Cost is cheap $5.00 for OBC and Almonte Club members. Others are $8.00. The course will be the same as last year - 71km. For those who have never ridden the event, you will find it a challenging route over back roads, through woodlots, narrow farmers lanes, some paved sections, and even a cute little hill near the end for your riding pleasure. Forget your 19mm tires. This is an event for wide threaded tires on cyclo-cross bikes. Although you can ride anything: road, cross, mountain, touring or hybrid bike, you must be your own support! Flats are known to occur - there are lots of gravel roads. There is no support provided. So bring spare tubes, tires, pump and emergency tools - otherwise it can be a long ride back to Almonte. The route is well marked with arrows. Leaders usually take 2 hours to complete the course. But if you do it, you'll love it, but your bike will get dirty! The only prize is the famous "pavee" trophies for the first male and female. NOTE: If you are under 18 years of age, you need to have your parent there to sign the waiver or have a letter granting permission for you to ride the race, OUTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ENTER THE EVENT!!!! If you cannot ride but are willing to help at an intersection, call or email me to let me know. I will be marking the course on Saturday afternoon if you were riding the circuit before then. I do not do this sooner, as some signs have been removed by the locals and I do not want to do the signs a second time. If you have any questions call me at 729-2842 or email me.
