Hi Kevin,
The Cosmos wheel uses an Open Pro rim. I took a good look at the Cosmos
when they came out, and I had the same comparison as you (Cosmos vs
Ultegra/Open Pro).
I went with the Ultegra/Open Pro for two reasons:
1) The actual weight difference between the two is minimal (I seem to
recall 10%). Both wheels have quality hubs (the Ultegra hubs just need
to get more grease added - they don't seem to have enough out of the
box). Cosmos use 24 straight pull spokes on the front, 28 rear three
cross. What the "real world" difference between this and 32 spokes three
cross front and back is an academic debate. I like the look of the
Ultegra/Open Pro (ya, that's a good reason...) that little bit more.
2) After having been "stranded" (well it wasn't me, it was Sara:) on a
tour, 20 km from a shop, I find it really nice to know that I can get a
spoke (or three) for the Ultegra/Open Pro combo at any shop. But then
again, I could just bring a few spare Mavic spokes...
In the end, the two are functionally equivalent wheelsets - Maybe cost
is the deciding factor?
