Amen. If in doubt, attend the Bram Moerman school of emergency road
repairs. Ask him about time time the rear wheel (R.I.P.) collapsed on
his tandem when he was riding wih me during Rideau Lakes several years
ago.
Memories of Rideau Lakes past...
We attempted the "challenge" route both days. On the way down, we
pretzeled the rear wheel on the short steep climb just outside of
Lanark. We detoured to the classic route and made it to Kingston no
worse for wear. Alas, on the return trip the rear wheel wouldn't take
any more abuse, and collapsed in the middle of nowhere between
Mayberly and Elphin(?). (I think we had lost four spokes so far).
Bram straightened things about as best he could and we continued on
being as "light" and "gentle" as possible. (Neither Bram nor I should
be considered "light weight" riders, and "gentle" and "tandem"
generally should not be used in the same sentence). If you know the
roads, this section happens to be the hilliest, and we were down to
the front brake only, so the ride was entertaining to say the least.
Anyway, we made it to Perth (though crossing Hwy 7 was fun) where we
abandoned. John Ford brought the bike back to Ottawa in the juice
van. Bram and I mooched rides back to Carleton where a good time was
had by all. The wheel was shot, to put it out of its misery, and
given a decent burial.

Friendly locals help too (especially when you need that big wrench to
get wheel nuts off).
