(This is a reconstruction of a message mailed yesterday which
seems to have disappeared into Topica's black hole.)

I have learned of the facts concerning the rider who suffered three
flats and am convinced that he could not have foreseen the situation he
found himself in. The failures were a result of very bad luck. He was
riding in the middle of a pack and with only a late warning found
himself running an ugly pothole. Both tires flatted. It wasn't his day -
on the way back he hit a pebble and pinched another tube. He was riding
a well-maintained bike, carried a spare tube, a CO2 cartridge and a
patch kit. When he rejoined his group, the others were more than happy
to let him pull most of the way back against the wind.

Obviously, my earlier comments fall into the category of unfair
speculation. Thanks are owed to Ross Knight and others for hanging
around to assist.

What happened in this case was an (untypical) example of the costs and
benefits of group riding!

(p.s. in the category of FWIW, the Extra Sportif group I rode with
arrived back without losing anyone. We were relieved that Paul Datars
had decided to take a Sunday off :-))
