I much rather the bike lanes. I have now riden the
lanes a few times, and no gravel has accumulated, and
how it would magically appear is beyond me - there are
no gravel entries to the bridge - so a dump truck
would have to do some dirty work.

The lack of bike lanes will not somehow "teach"
drivers to pass safely. I'll take the safer ride
without my life at risk for the many drivers who think
I don't belong, and don't complete safe passes. Sure
maybe they'll hit me, and never pass unsafely a second
time - in the meantime, i'm the one seriously injured
or dead. Until we have LAWS and EDUCATION in place
that put the priority to the cyclist (as in a few
European countries), we're not going to be changing
attitude very quickly by merely suggesting that we
ride well from the right edge of the road, where we
belong, and expect that the motorists will suddenly be
hit with a flash of new found respect for cyclists.
I've had too many close calls on completely empty
roads by motorists that still won't pull over to pass
because they have some "vigilante (obviously
misinformed) statement" to make to the gall that would
dare ride on their high speed country road or on their
parkway (instead of the "bike" paths).

I will admit that the lanes may have been poorly
planned at intersections off the bridge - so let's
focus where the real problem is.

Michael
