I'm a board member and I supported the motion to restrict postings to the mailing list.

I admit I (and other board members) had lots of reservations about this action. But
it seemed to me
at the time that some of the acrimony that seems to charge the atmosphere of the club
these days has
originated on the mailing list. Certainly some of it has arisen between identifiable
club members.

Some too has come from unidentified sources, and some requests for action by the board
come from
unidentifiable sources. It's true that these can be quickly deleted but I thought at
the time of
the vote that it was worth at least a trial period to see if this restriction would do
anything to
calm what seems to be a growing spirit of animosity.

Note that it only restricts automatic postings by non-members; it does not (as I
understand it)
restrict the ability to read or subscribe to the list by anyone. It does not restrict
non-members
from posting through the list moderator.

We as a volunteer board have to manage a corporation with a $250,000 annual budget and
a lot of
activities. Sometimes we may make unwise decisions.

But to suggest that the members of the board are mean-spirited is a bit of a stretch.
Look at the
activities we put on.

All the club activities are open to the cycling community at large and take a fair bit
of planning
and effort to execute. I'm happy to have an opportunity to contribute to a community
which is a big
part of my life. To some extent, a small part of the satisfaction is the control I
have over the
nature of the events I organize but I like to think that most of the reward is from
the enjoyment we
all have from participating in the events themselves.

I share the concern of most of the criticism I've read here about our decision to
restrict access to
the mailing list. But the complaint that the OBC is no fun is just not so.
