Residencies at Polli Talu Arts Center
Where: Estonia
When: 2008
Deadline: ongoing
POLLI TALU ARTS CENTER http://www.pollitalu.org in Estonia is accepting
applications throughout the fall of 2007 for residencies in 2008. Please

conditions and application procedures.
Polli Talu (literally, "Polly's Farm") is a traditional Estonian farm
complex situated near the Baltic Sea, 150 km southwest of the capital city
Tallinn, not far from the port town of Virtsu. It consists of five log
buildings with thatched roofs made from locally-harvested reeds. The
structures date back to the beginning of the 20th century.
Marika Blossfeldt, an Estonian who had left her native country as a very
young child to live in Germany and, later, New York City, welcomed the
opportunity to purchase Polli's Farm in 1995. Her vision was to transform
the complex into an international arts center. The opportunity to purchase
the property and realize her vision arose only after the collapse of the
Soviet Union in 1991.
In 1998 Polli Talu Arts Center was registered as a non-profit organization
in Estonia. 1999 marked the first season of artistic and educational
activities at Polli Talu Arts Center.

Res Artis Newsletter 11 December 2007
| Greetings from Res Artis.

Bright Ugochukwu was invited to the Djerassi Resident Artist Program in California, USA. To see images from the residency, please click here
From Djerassi:
Nigerian environmental artist Bright Ugochukwu Eke created a new permanent installation for the Djerassi Resident Artist Programs outdoor sculpture collection during his residency in July 2007. The installation is comprised of forty large-scale fish carved from redwood shards, stained black, and suspended in a large California oak tree. Hanging from each fish are small plastic bags filled with oil, signifying the pollution that plagues the rivers and landscape in Ekes homeland. During his residency, Eke also gave a talk at the Palo Alto Art Center about his new installation and his environmental concerns.
About Djerassi:
Now in its 28th year, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program is internationally recognized as one of the eminent artist residency programs. We strive to provide the best possible residency experience for artists of superior talent from a diverse range of backgrounds and geographical locations.
As stewards of a unique and beautiful property, we also seek to preserve the land and use our facilities wisely and efficiently for maximum benefit to the artists and with the least impact on the environment.
From Eke:
Five weeks out here in isolation doing only critical thinking, ideas and experimentation was a really great leap in my creative preview
.all that walking along the trails, through the woods and around the ranch, the sight of those magnificent mountains, and when I saw myself moving in the chill of that fog...oh! it was a soul-body dialogue.
About Eke:
Born in Nigeria in 1976, Eke received BA and MFA degrees in Fine Arts from the University of Nigeria. Early on, the direction of Ekes work was inspired by the physical pain of his exposure to acid rain. In response, he created an installation, Acid Rain, (2005), that simulated the danger that lurks in a simple raindrop. In another work, Shields, (2006) Eke used empty drinking water sacks to fashion plastic raincoats and umbrellas to protect wearers from acid rain. Ironically, sacks of clean water are sold in Nigeria due to the lack of clean drinking water, a result of rampant pollution. Once discarded, the sacks become part of the litter that contributes to the horrendous cycle of pollution. In these and other works, Eke highlights the dire effects of industrialization, especially in developing countries, where much of the natural environment has been destroyed.

In 2007, these residencies will take place, the African artists will travel throughout the world, hosted by the various organizations. Each newsletter this year will feature a residency and their resident artist.
