University of Warsaw July 15-18, 2008 Warsaw, Poland The Centre for East European Studies of the University of Warsaw (STUDIUM EUROPY Wschodniej UW) is organizing the WARSAW EAST EUROPEAN CONFERENCE, the Fifth Anniversary Session, to be held in Warsaw, July 15-18, 2008. THE WARSAW EAST EUROPEAN CONFERENCE will be held under the distinguished patronage of the Rector Magnificus of the University of Warsaw, Professor Katarzyna Cha?asinska - Macukow. THE MAIN SUBJECT of the Warsaw East European Conference, Fifth Annual Session is question of freedom and power in East Central, South East and Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia and Caucasus since 18 century. The Conference will focus on history of 19 and 20 centuries as well as current political, social, economic, national and cultural issues broadly reflecting the main subject. Special attention will be given to the problems of the communist and post-communist world. Below we present a list of specific topics of the 2008 Conference: 19th century the birth or the revival of the nations? In the process of paper registration you will be able to choose one, from the panels mentioned above. Nevertheless, we will be also ready to consider other subjects of presentation broadly reflecting the main theme of the Conference. LOCATION THE CONFERENCE will be held in the renewed Old University Library building at the University of Warsaw historical main campus, in the historical centre of Warsaw, at Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street, 26/28. SCHEDULE THE CONFERENCE will begin on Tuesday, July 15 at 4 PM, and end on Friday, July 18 at 6 PM, 2008. Please follow instructions found on the site in filling in the correct forms. Please note that participants with individual papers will be brought together into panel groups. THE PAPER PROPOSALS, full papers and their abstracts must be written in English. However, in exceptional cases, the Conference organizers will allow some presentations in the panels to be delivered in Polish, on condition that a comprehensive written summary or the entire text in English is made available to the audience and the organizers. Also the organizers have to be informed earlier (no less than 1 month in advance). PANEL PROPOSAL Panels may be proposed under these conditions: 1. the theme of the panel has to reflect the main theme of the Conference 2. there must be 3 - 4 guaranteed participants. 3. one of the participants has to be the Chair of the proposed panel. Furthermore, if the conditions are fulfilled we can also assign a discussant to the panel. Registration fee may be paid on the University of Warsaw account or later after arrival at the Conference Registration Desk FUNDING PARTICIPANTS of the WEEC 2008 are responsible for covering all travel, accommodation and registration costs. However, registered participants, chairs and discussants may be offered: free accommodation in the University student hostels. Furthermore, help is offered with making reservations in hotels with witch certain prices have been arranged for the participants of the WEEC Conference. EXHIBITIONS THE PRESENTATION of Polish non-governmental organizations active in the post-Soviet area will be a part of the Conference programme. THE REVIEWS of Polish films related to the subject of the Conference are also included to the program. THE EXHIBITION of Polish and East and Central Europe publishing houses active in the field of regional studies will take place during the Conference. CONFERENCE PAPERS Abstracts of all the conference papers will be published in one volume prepaired for the WEEC 2008. The best Conference papers will be published later in Warsaw East European Review, new academic journal, presenting also results of 2007 and partly of previous Warsaw East European Conferences. All the participants, who presented papers during the previous conferences (2005-2006), are kindly asked to send us short abstracts of their presentations (circa 2000 characters).
