TRANSLOCAL EXPRESS. JUBILEE EDITIONDate: Feb 21–23, 2008Venue: Museum of
Occupations, Tallinn (Estonia)
A seminar addressing the growing tendencies of nationalism on Easternborders of
Europe (from Helsinki to Istanbul) and its reflections incontemporary
art.Translocal Express. Jubilee Edition is a counter-birthday celebrationtaking
place parallel with the celebrations of the 90th anniversary ofRepublic of
Estonia. Keeping in mind that the year 1918 was a landmarkof establishing
nation-states in many countries that are now locatedon the Eastern borders of
Europe, the seminar aims to examine thereactions from the field of contemporary
art towards currentnationalist discourses in the re-established nation-states
of formerEastern Europe and neighbouring countries.Whereas in the former
socialist block national resistance to thesocialist system is remembered in a
positive way, the currentre-emergence of nationalist sentiments in Europe more
generally is analarming tendency which is often accompanied by growing
phenomena ofxenophobia and racism. The critique of nationalism becomes
especiallyurgent in the light of the growing reality of migration which is
nowunder debate extensively. Since the production of culture is oftenexpected
to support the ideas and values connected to the idea ofnation, a critical
response from the cultural field is an urgency ofour time.
