Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia Visual and Cultural Research Centre "Euro-Balkan" Institute OHRID SUMMER UNIVERSITY 2008 - "Global Economy and Creative Industries"
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION http://www.euba.org.mk/eng/sub.asp?id=519&kat=78 The goal of the summer school " Global Economy and Creative Industries " is to put forward some important issues about the economic development of South East Europe during the era of transition, by merging together the economic and cultural domains of life. While in the previous centralised economic system, art and culture were seen as fields necessarily isolated from any commercial value and always supported by the state, today culture needs to be seen as a business on its own. The potential of creative sector to contribute to the growth and development of transitional economies has been increasingly recognised. Creative industries are activities that have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and have a potential for wealth and job creation. Thematic Framework: Creative industries encompass major segments including: art products; visual arts; design, architecture, crafts, performing arts, film and audiovisual arts, literature, books and publishing, software, computer games, television and radio, music, fashion design, museums and galleries, as well as cultural tourism and cultural heritage. The genesis of economic value comes from an individual's inspiration and, in turn, the reputation that he or she gains for his or her creative talent. Since the cultural products are information-based, the rapid advance of digital technologies and the globalisation of communications networks have made the cultural sector one of the fastest-growing in the world. Many of today's most successful companies are broadcasters, publishers, entertainers and games designers, and they are growing fast. The participants will be encouraged to collaborate in teams towards the development of innovative academic agendas about creative industries, as novel academic field in Macedonia. Also, the participants will be encouraged to combine their forces to smooth the acceptance of this novel approach toward the economy in various segments of the education and government. Format: Introductory lectures, seminars, workshops and debates, aiming to ask the key questions that arise from the creative industries: - How to develop competitive and sustainable creative economy? - What are the particular problems that are faced by the transitional and developing economies? - How to establish a production system that will enable and benefit from the reciprocal working relations between creative economy, creative industries and cultural sector?
