The Gwangju Biennale hosts second edition of International Curator
Course from August 9 to September 5. The International Curator Course,
which drew much attention last year from young curators around the
globe, will take place in parallel with the 8th Gwangju Biennale and
it will offer ample opportunities to better explore one of the most
talked-about events in the art world. The visiting professor for this
year's course will be Dan Cameron, an internationally acclaimed
curator and writer from New York.

Dan Cameron is Founder and Artistic Director of U.S. Biennial that
produces Prospect New Orleans, a new international biennial whose
first edition opened in November 2008. Cameron was Senior Curator at
the New Museum from 1995 to 2006, where he curated numerous
exhibitions included Carroll Dunham, William Kentridge, Cildo
Meireles, Christian Marclay, Paul McCarthy and Francesco Vezzoli. In
2003 Cameron served as Artistic Director for the 8th Istanbul
Biennial, entitled Poetic Justice, and in 2006 he co-organized the
10th Taipei Biennial, Dirty Yoga. He is also a member of the graduate
faculty of School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York.

In addition to Mr. Cameron, six renowned curators from different
continents will be lecturing at the course and helping students gain
both hands-on experience and academic knowledge through the in-depth
training program.

This year's course will deal with some of the hottest discourses in
the contemporary art and visual culture, such as the emergence of
market dominance and the decline of criticism, the diversification and
generalization of public art, the rise of visual images and the fall
of word, global scale exhibitions so called the exhibitionists'
exhibition, the relationship of technology and visual art and the
violence of spectacles.

The participants will have the opportunity to take part in the process
of installation of artworks for the biennale under the guidance of
artistic director, curators, and artists. They will also be holding
discussions on various subjects and making group presentations in the
final stage of the course.

To apply for the course, download the application form from the
Gwangju Biennale website, fill it out completely, and submit it with
the statement of purpose for the application, an updated curriculum
vitae, work history, and portfolio if applicable. The panel of five
judges who will be reviewing the applicants includes Yongwoo Lee, CEO
of the Gwangju Biennale, Massimiliano Gioni, artistic director of the
2010 Gwangju Biennale, HyoSang Seung, artistic director of the 2011
Gwangju Design Biennale, Visiting Professor Dan Cameron, and Lee Bul,
artist. The course is open to all regardless of academic background,
gender, religion, and nationality. However, since the course aims to
give young curators more opportunities to receive in-depth training,
an age restriction has been set at 35 and under.

The Gwangju Biennale will grant tuitions for those who are selected to
join the course and accommodations will be provided during the entire
course in Gwangju. Each participant will be responsible for covering
their round trip air tickets to Gwangju and food expenses during the
course.
