Pruitt-Igoe a fost construit la mijlocul anilor 1950, în orașul St.
Louis, Missouri, ca un proiect de mare anvergură de locuințe urbane,
pentru a înlocui cocioabele din cartierele sărace și pentru a crea
condiții de viață mai bune. Cu toate că Pruitt-Igoe a fost privit
ca o soluție pe termen lung pentru problemele de locuință, așa cum
a fost numit chiar „penthouse-ul săracilor”, complexul a devenit
în curînd un coșmar pentru locuitori pîna la momentul imploziei
lui, extrem de mediatizate, ce a pus capăt poveștii și l-a
transformat într-un simbol al eșecului arhitecturii moderniste și
politicilor publice de planificare. În acest documentar Chad
Freidrichs încearcă să desfășoare mitul lui Pruitt-Igoe, arătînd
trecutul istoric rar menționat și dimensiunea umană a poveștii.

Pruitt-Igoe was built as a large urban housing project in the
mid-1950s in the city of St. Louis, Missouri to liberate the residents
from slums and ensure better life conditions for them. However Pruitt-
Igoe was regarded as the future solution for housing problems, as it
was even called as ’the poor man’s penthouse’, the complex soon
became a nightmare for the inhabitants until a highly-publicized
implosion made an end of the story turn it into a symbol of failure of
Modern architecture and public-policy planning. In his documentary
Chad Freidrichs tries to unfold the myth of Pruitt-Igoe showing the
rarely mentioned historical background and human dimension of the story.
