WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans' pessimism about the economy appears to be
lifting, with consumer expectations for the next six months hitting their most
positive point since the recession began. And a national gauge of home prices
has posted its first quarterly increase in three years.

Wednesday may provide more good news: a report on new home sales is expected to
show that sales rose for the fourth straight month in July. That would follow a
report last week that sales of existing homes rose 7.2 percent in July, also
the fourth straight monthly gain.

Analysts expect a separate report will show that orders for durable goods --
those likely to last three years or more, such as autos and appliances -- rose
3 percent last month, after falling 2.2 percent in June.
