*Asia Coal-Prices hits a two-month low on weak offers*
SYDNEY, March 27 (Reuters) - Benchmark Australian spot thermal coal prices fell to a two-month low of $50.25, data showed on Tuesday, dragged down by lower offers from smaller producers who were hard-pressed to sell their tonnages. Traders said no deals were done at that price as buyers were still apprehensive about buying Australian coal given the long waiting times at Newcastle port, the world's largest coal export terminal, where queues have blown out to nearly 70 vessels. Thermal coal, used for power generation, fell $3.36 to $50.25 a tonne, the globalCOAL NEWC index showed, based on free-on-board (FOB) prices loaded at Newcastle. "Prices fell mainly because of lower offers. And since this is very much below the market price of about $54, the offers probably came from smaller producers who had shipments cancelled and were urgently trying to sell the spot tonnage to avoid demurrage," said an Australian-based trader. The fall, based on Monday's closing price from Friday, comes after spot prices climbed to a one-month high of $54.10 a tonne last week, driven by producers who were eager to take advantage of tight supply in the market.
From a week earlier, spot prices were down $3.85.
Long lines have been a feature at Newcastle port since November due to maintenance work on rail tracks and capacity constraints, costing the industry more than A$1 million a day in demurrage fees to shipping companies. Although the port has reinstated a queue management system, the situation has yet to improve. Australia's competition regulator said it has been advised by miners that it could take until July to reduce vessel queues to a more workable length. The Asian spot market has been tepid lately as Korean power companies source their demand through open tenders and Japanese utilities cut down spot buying as they wrap up fiscal 2007 term supply contracts. Faced with the lengthy ship queues at Newcastle, tightening Chinese supplies and limited Indonesian tonnage due to months of rain, Asian buyers have been forced to buy high quality coal from as far afield as South Africa. A source at a North Asian company, who declined to be identified, said last week it had bought Q2/Q3 cargoes of South African coal for the first time in three years to compensate for shortfalls in Chinese supply. Market sources have said Taiwan's Formosa Plastics Group and generator Taipower have each bought at least one cape-sized cargo (150,000 tonnes) of South African coal from producers this month, and were looking for more. Industry sources said coal supply would tighten further as China cuts exports and begins to import coal to fuel its booming economy, which would give a big boost to prices. Shenhua Energy Co. Ltd. 1088.HK, China's top coal producer and supplier, said on Monday it will cut export sales by 4 percent to 23 million tonnes in 2007 and begin buying in fuel from Australia and Indonesia.
