The Kuala Lumpur Tin Market (KLTM) closed at a record high today as most traders went on a buying spree following concerns of a supply disruption in one of the largest tin producers, Indonesia. Tin industry workers in Indonesia are said to be planning to protest for higher wages, a dealer said. The metal price on the KLTM rose US$240 to US$14,660 per tonne today, breaking the previous record of US$14,620 posted on April 10, 2007. Indonesia has reduced supply and China, the largest tin producer, is unable to fill the gap, as the consumption in China itself is very high, said the dealer. Persistent demand from Japan, one of the largest industrial countries, contributed to the increase in the local metal price, he added.
