Hence, if palm-biodiesel is banned, palm oil will still be imported into the EU as food. Vegetable oil prices move in tandem with one another, and as long as EU moves ahead with its biofuel policies, veg oil inventories will continue to be drawn down, and this will support palmoil prices. - EU is the second largest importer of palm oil in the world (after China) and the bulk of its ends up in food; it imports some 5mn tonnes or 13-14%% of global CPO production. - The Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) has been set up to address the "sustainability" issues. The RSPO will get an audit ready to issue certification for plantation companies which adopt environmentally- friendly practices.
