Société Générale shares rise on takeover talk

Reuters
 Wednesday, February 6, 2008

*PARIS:* Shares of Société Générale rose more then 6 percent as traders
cited renewed market talk that HSBC Holdings could make a bid for the French
bank, which is reeling from a trading scandal.

"We never comment on market rumour or speculation," a spokesman for HSBC
said.

At midday in Paris, the shares were up €4.91, or 6.2 percent, at €84.11. The
bank has a market value of €39.3 billion, or $57.5 billion.

HSBC shares in London slipped 9 pence, or 1.2 percent, to £7.50, or $14.73.

Société Générale has been the subject of speculation of a bid mainly from
its French rival BNP Paribas, but HSBC was one of the European banks
reported by analysts to be a potential suitor last week.

The French government has said that it will oppose any hostile offer for the
bank, and that it would prefer a French takeover if one is necessary to help
Société Générale overcome its problems.

The bank has said it lost €4.9 billion as a result of unauthorized trading
by an arbitrageur, Jérôme Kerviel.
