Hi all

I might be wrong here, but it seems that the impetus for this
discussion is the recent spate of inflammatory comments (if this were
done purely to provoke a reaction, or seek attention, it would be
called "trolling" on internet forums). While I agree with the need for
a code of conduct or at least a list of netiquette rules, I think the
best attitude here would have been the one reflected in the M&G forum:
just ignore the offenders and they will stop when they see that no-one
is interested.

The problem with a code of conduct is that it will only be effective
if it's enforced. However, I don't think anyone has the time to
actively monitor the list. Also, do we want to go down the path of
censorship? Everyone who is part of this community has the right to
express their views, however personally disagreeable they may be. The
only restriction should be if what is being said is not within the
ambit of the list.

Perhaps a clear statement of intent for the list would be more
appropriate. Is this list purely informational or is it a discussion
forum? A set of guidelines for what this group is about would be a
start to limiting unhelpful or irrelevant comments. From there we
could proceed to a code of conduct on how we want to go about
achieving the goals and intentions of this email group.

Regards,

Jo
