I am reading these posts with interest, as I have fallen into the same trap many years ago,, where I would feed people when they came to the gate, or where they wanted "odd jobs" I would give, and I would find things getting worse and worse as though my gate had a neon sign that said free food and good pay for jobs done.
It took me a little while to mentally switch this Neon sign out and then cut the electricity cable, so from that day onwards, no food at the door, no jobs offered to the strollers. A month or two went by and I finally realised the neon sign was out for good, and to date my door bell is never rung (they cannot find where it is hidden) and when they bang at the gate the front door never opens. I also have a policy I never leave the front door open. Today peace and quiet. Some months back I heard two ladies talking the one was banging on my gate and the other was going past said to the gate banger, this "rubbish" will give you nothing, so the message has got out and no further hassle. I told him no thanks I don't need any help last weekend (after he persisted which is bloody irritating) and he got quite aggro with me, told me I did not have to be so rude. Gave me the creeps.
