And, > if there's a good reason why they shouldn't, what can be done about it? > If fishing is prohibited and I can;t understand why, then it is not from a conservation point of view as the only fish taken are barbel and sometimes carp. It would probably be good to eliminate those species from the river to allow the indiginous fish a chance to recover. As a member of the Friends of the Liesbeek and Two Rivers Urban Park committees I can see no problem to fishing and both those organisations are pleased to see people making use of the park and the river. The Friends work closely with Nature Conservation and I will make some enquiries as to the fishing situation. But presently unless the fisher man are engaging in antisocial behaviour or are littering or creating a disturbance I can't see why any thing needs to be done. Law enforcement has bigger fish to fry (sorry I had to throw one fishy pun in here somewhere!) I will table the question at the next meetings of FOL and TRUP and OCA To comment on Frans comment-most fishers are recreational and share your sentiments, however there are subsistance fishers that take their catch home and sell it for food and they are getting R20kg. I personally helped one chap from Maitland haul in some nice barbel. He must have had 30 in his catchbags! He was going to walk back to Maitland but becasue he let me catch some fish I traded him for a ride home - he must have had at least 60kg of fish so thats about R1200 worth!!!!!! He explained he comes to the river sometimes when he can't get a place on one of the boats or when the boats do not go out.
