About ten days ago I noticed a man walking on the roof parapet wall of
the cottage on my property. He had no reason to be there but the
cottage adjoins the property behind me, which is accessed from Milner
road. I immediately went around to the neighbour whose backyard he
seemed to go down in to and asked if he had anyone working for him, he
said no! But he said they were working at a house two doors down. I
left it at that as I had heard banging, and what sounded like roof
sheeting being moved and someone using a grinder - this had been going
on for some time.
On Tuesday morning I was in my garden at 6.45 and heard an alarm go
off at the house directly behind mine. This house adjoins the house
where the builders were (both property's owned by the same person and
rented out.) Both houses are accessed from Milner road. Then almost
immediately I heard a lot of glass glass breaking. I immediately
phoned a neighbour (Rich) whose property is next door to that one, in
Milner. The house had been broken into with the tenants in it.
I feel people should make the effort to know who their builders/
carpenters/cleaners/gardeners are. Often builders hire casual labour,
unemployed and underpaid men at the roadside, who then have access to
the roof tops and walls of several adjoining properties. It is silly
and naive to let strangers onto one’s property in a country with high
unemployment and huge inequality. I don't believe criminals wander the
streets and then randomly hop over walls and break into houses they
don't know. They have almost always had some form of access to the
property or adjoining property and checked it out.
