*THERE IS A MEETING AROUND CRIME
at 21 LWR MAIN ON 22 DEC at 10h00
THE SAPS, VS AND ADT WILL BE PRESENT.*
Any ONW member/s with issues can bring these up at this meeting.

Ja, VS certainly should answer their cell phones....
And, ja.....we certainly should prioritise our high risk areas.

I wish the matter of prioritising high risk streets/areas were a simple
thing to resolve, but.....there are so many of them.....
Off the top of my head: Trill / Station / Milton / Scott.....and Polo to a
lesser degree I guess.
Apart from all the little side roads where many folk hang around for a
bag-snatching / cell-fone-snatching / money-grabbing opportunity to pass
them by..... (Robins / Wesley / Lytton / Cook are a few off the top of my
head).

Neighbourhood Watch Poster Alerts....
ONW members Alida and Kim have been working hard to design and promote large
signs ( A2 size [?], costing R180 each ) alerting thugs to their being in a
Neighbourhood Watch area. They've come a long way and I'd guess we should
certainly have *some* signs up in the suburb by the end of about Feb/Mar
2010. Concerned Observatory residents are going to need to club together to
access these signs. C.C.T. gives permission for only 50 to be erected in
the suburb. I have already started collecting from folk in my road so that
we can at least have one sign up on the cnr of Scott and Robins.....a hot
area.

Residents actively involved in combatting crime.....
There is a small (but growing ?) number of residents who are concerned
patrollers in Obs.
I wish there were a few more.....especially a few more 2-way
radio-holders!! There are those who certainly do their bit and this makes a
difference to the areas in which they 'observe'. It gives me a good feeling
to know that there are folk rooting for me out there.....

'Drag-nets' for certain blocks ( e.g. Wesley / Scott / Robins / Bishop)
.....
It's been suggested (following on your suggestion Brian....) that certain
blocks - esp. in the red zone - should be "drag-netted" at night by the SAPS
and VS with ONW members present. Anyone passing thru these areas should be
checked out and searched (....not by ONW members naturally). I will speak
to our Sector Manager to see whether he will come in on the suggestion.
I've a hunch that if aspirant thieves / thugs / whatever know that they
stand to be searched in random areas and at random times it may serve as
some sort of deterrent....

Roadblocks.....
SAPS have had a good few roadblocks throughout winter (.....mostly Salt
River area and one of late in Station Road) where I have seen folk arrested
for drunk driving. I also saw someone being searched by the dog squad for
drugs..... We could always do with more......but there's a major staff
problem in the SAPS..... ?

So ja.......much the ONW has come a long way........*we still have some
distance to go...............and......groan....**we're working on it in our
own very Observatorian-kinda-way.....*

Thanks to all those really do make a concerted effort to be actively
watchful and helpful (in whatever ways) out there. Sometimes I find it hard
to believe we've achieved so much.....

You're a great mover and shaker Brian.
Never forgetting the Amery 'Brian.......' to whom I'm also eternally
grateful. Without BA we'd not have Vetus Schola who have made a *tremendous
*difference to Obs.
Come on back BB !!!
