Some Crime fighting ideas

Provide practical tips. For example for people who live alone to leave a
large pair of men's boots within the safety gate in front of front door. Or
hang up a dog leash next to Beware of dog sign by the front door. Offer a
small incentive for the best safety tip like identifying keys by means of a
code  instead of writing on labels to which gate/door access can be gained;
or to put gravel on pathways GREAT IDEA

Ask members to log the number of kilometres they patrol - write in the
redesigned "togbag sign out book" - and publish the total each month viz
3500 kilometres on patrol..

Ask residents to commit to a PLEDGE and reply by email. Prepare email form.
I will patrol for xxxx hours once a week
I will patrol for xxxx hours once a fortnight

I will patrol for xxxx hours once a month

I will patrol for xxxx hours once a quarter

I will patrol for xxxx hours once every six months.

   I will NOT patrol.

Have an awards evening for XXX crime watch SOME WATCHES ALREADY DO THIS
SUCCESSFULLY
        Most supportive journalist

        Outstanding patroller award

        Significant contribution award

        Most innovate ideas award

The SAPS PR award to Crime watch for ...

Make estate agents in honorary patrollers. Publicise who has joined up.

Sign up elderly folk as who seldom leave their houses to be 'Window
Watchers," looking out for children and any unusual activities in the
neighborhood.

Provide patrollers with "CarSafe stickers". In 1995, the Boston Police
conducted a safety sur vey with CarSafe tickets notifying the vehicle owners
of unlocked and/or unattended vehicles, personal property in plain view,
cellular phone in view, keys left in the ignition, or other valuables. In
three months the officers issued a total of 272 CarSafe Tickets. Car
break-ins reduced by 30%. SEVEAL WATCHES ALREADY DO THIS WITH NOTE PADS
SPONSORED BY LOCAL SSP, BUT ARE PATROLLERS/SAPS USING EFFECTIVELY

Have certain "wolfpack" days or nights when a minimum of six cars patrol at
a time.

Get a sticker made for all people who patrol to put on front window on
drivers side saying "Patrol buddy". Organize some method of recognition
between drivers such as a "thumbs up".

Get a sponsor and organize a seminar involving all of the 40 neighbourhood
watches in Cape Town/ Stellenbosch and give speakers 10 minutes each to
present their best practical tips for making a crime watch work, so that
there can be shared learnings. At the same time get a sponsor to organize
the 'best neighbourhood crime watch' competition.

Run a monthly competition. R20 per ticket. Winner gets crime watch radio.
(Rules to state that a minimum of +- 90 tickets need to be sold per month.)

Review the concept of Street captains. Street captains could be in charge of
a cell of (say) 6-8 houses. So a street like Livermore would have 7[?]cells.
Each cell would commit to patrolling 2 hours once a month (or some other
amount.) Publish which cells have played their part. Should larger streets
with say 30 houses have say five street captains with an overall street
commander?

Who does one report Copperheads Cable Theft, Fraud, Illegal dumping, child
abuse, squatter control, or drug abuse to? The information may be on our
website. ALREADY ON WEB AND MOBILE ALERTS AND IN SEVERAL LOCAL PUBLICATIONS

Notice how one website gives credit to the person reporting a crime, and how
often the item is read.

Perhaps do a campaign with a short-term insurance company reminding people
to make an inventory of their valuables

Why not get the paper to do a comparative survey of all the Southern suburb
crime watches in terms of number of streets and number of patrollers?
Publish results.

Thanking people for what they doThe core group of patrollers will probably
keep up their patrols although I would like to have seen some monthly
recognition from the chairperson by email saying something like "Well done.
Great to see you out there this month.
This is not difficult to do using the BCC address in email. All the names of
the 35 people are put on one email and the email is sent. The recipient only
receives an email addressed to him/her and not other people. I guess copying
the email addresses into one line will take about 20 minutes.

Liaison with other crime watches. It seems that there is very little
coordination between areas such as BKM, Kirstenhof, Tokai. All areas are
suffering from a lack of visibility. How about a quid pro quo? What if, once
a month on one particular day a month, eight Tncw vehicles were to join
forces with BKM and help patrol their area. Here's how? The Tokai vehicles
would meet at a particular spot in BKM territory. Just for that night only,
(if the patrol is at night) all BKM radios and Tango radios would be given a
unified name such as Glue 1.2.,3 etc. They all report under that name. The
tango vehicles would be assigned specific high visibility places where they
would park, and the BKM vehicles who know the area would roam the streets.
The impression to create among the public and criminals: There are a lot of
patrollers out there. Similarly, next time Tokai has a blitz, BKM vehicles
join us. The big thing is to grow momentum. When we invite BKM, clearly we
will pull out all the stops not to be "shown up". A little friendly
competition is good.

Incentivise people to patrol Currently SOME NWS view seems to be "patrollers
- get out there and do your duty.". I believe serious thought should be
given to an incentive program. If you patrol once every month for two hours,
you are eligible for a trip to Mauritius; if you patrol six times a year
you get a case of wine (or whatever). Of course someone would have to do
spot checks. Why not give one lucky patroller each month R500 to cover their
petrol expenses? I think if one shopped around many organizations would be
prepared to make a contribution towards prizes whether gift vouchers from
Woolworths or whatever. While patrolling may be a chore, a least the
patroller thinks: Patrolling in this way at least has this advantage, I
could win one of three prizes or even the grand 'end of year prize'! What is
the principle whereby the current nw committee is so against this? Shouldn't
right effort be rewarded? Shouldn't the sacrifice of the few be
compensated? Shouldn't people be motivated to patrol?

Penalise streets if no patrollers.

Let people know the new approach. Send a newsletter out saying, : "It's not
fair for patrollers to have to patrol streets when the people in the street
won't help themselves. If no one in your street offers to patrol, NW will no
longer patrol your street which is currently being visited 250 to 300 times
a month by patrollers. You will still get the services of ADT and other
security firms."

House gate stickers

Why not produce a small crime watch sticker saying "I go out on crime watch
patrols. Do you?" Isn't it about time that people were nudged out of their
apathy?
.

The log book.

This is fairly scrappy. Why not start a new one but this time add an extra
column. Number of times patrolled this year. As patrollers begin to see how
much other patrollers are doing, it may motivate them to do more. (It's not
very difficult to go back through the pages and find the number of the
previous time you patrolled.)

Get new two-channel radios for support
Patrolling out there is a lonely task. At best there might be one or two
other patrollers out there. Usually all you hear is the other patroller sign
on or off. But if each person going out on patrol took two radios i.e. the
ADT radio and a shortwave radio which could transmit and receive over a
kilometre or two. The patrollers could listen in on the ADT radio and chat
over the shortwave.."I'm going down XXX..there's an unmarked car in XX Lane.
Want to see if it is still there?" This would make patrolling more fun.
