With assistance from Cape Mental Health, the police, and Vetus Schola, we finally secured an involuntary admission for Colin to Groote Schuur. He has been assessed by the psychiatrists at Ward C23 over the weekend. During his stay there he has been cooperative and well-behaved. Their view is that although he is mildly psychotic his present condition does not justify transfer to Valkenberg. They are releasing him this afternoon. They understand the concerns of many residents and strongly recommend that people take the legal route and insist on police intervention should Colin break the law (e.g. by trespassing, or through abusive or threatening behaviour). A charge should be laid, and when the matter goes to court the magistrate is likely to recommend a 'forensic assessment', which is much more thorough and extensive. So however much you may feel that Colin is mentally ill or not responsible for his actions, this is their advice. This comes from Dr Moodley, one of the psychiatrists at Groote Schuur. She has not disclosed any confidential information and welcomes the fact that I am communicating this information via email or the google group.
