Dear Obs Resident, James Cowley and his team did a wonderful job of organising the vigil in Obs. James writes: A belated, but not a forgotten, word of thanks:- The Candlelight Vigil held Tuesday evening 13 April 2010 was a huge success. A count was made of 350 people attending; it was wonderful to see the collage of faces - many I've never met or seen before, the children at their sides, the Circle of Peace swelling as concerned individuals or family members filtered onto the Village Green, coming to show their solidarity against crime. Thank you. The dignitaries who addressed the vigil so willingly, a warm thank you. Your expression of the struggle for life and the need for peaceful living for all was well symbolised in the three flames which were lit and carried into the Circle of Peace in memory of Jane, Dominic and Benny, who were denied the very basic elements of human existence. - Colonel Van Der Riel - Officer Commanding Woodstock Police Station - Councillor Cedric Thomas - Councillor of Ward 57 - Councillor Paddy Chapple - Councillor - Dr Price - Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Town - Dr Rob Gaylard - Chairman of the Social Issues Forum - Ds Ben Kotze - Chairman Liesbeeck Christian Action Group - Loaves & Fishes - Mr Brian Amery - Manager of the Observatory Improvement District - Mr Teun Baartman - Chairman of the Woodstock Community Police Forum - Mr Trevor Hughes - Chairman, Observatory Civic Association The ONW is very thankful to the institutions and organisations which supported and contributed their services and commodities in making the Candlelight Vigil a success: - Hawkes & Findley, Station Road, Observatory - Impact Plus - Main Road, Observatory - Kwikspar, Station Road, Observatory - Mountain Road Primary School, Mountain Road, Woodstock - Pick'n'Pay, St Peter's Square, Main Road, Observatory - Salvation Army Observatory Corps, Dane Street, Observatory - Spencer Street Studios, Spencer Street, Salt River - Metro Police Training Academy, Observatory I wish to express a further note of thanks to those who assisted with the Vigil arrangements: Beverley Pettit - Dropping off invitations; Brian Amery - OBSID - Assistance re pamphlet postal drop.
