CITY OF CAPE TOWN

MEDIA RELEASE

20 SEPTEMBER 2010

Forty five suspects nabbed during Metro Police’s ’Operation Razor’

Forty five suspects, including thirty nine drunk drivers, were
arrested while 507 traffic fines were issued and 46 by-law offences
recorded during the Metro Police’s ‘Operation Razor’ over the weekend.

Since Friday morning, Metro Police officers conducted high visibility
of patrols in Maitland and Claremont. Later that day the focus shifted
to patrols across central Cape Town where five motorists were arrested
for drunk driving. Another two suspects were later arrested for
possession of dagga and cocaine. One hundred and ninety eight traffic
fines were issued during intensified traffic enforcement.

On Saturday 19 September one motorist was arrested in Khayelitsha for
drunk driving and 280 traffic fines were issued.

According to Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro: “The focus was not only on
traffic offences, but also enforcing the City’s by-laws. People have
become too complacent when it comes to petty offences such as spitting
and urinating in public, washing of vehicles on a public road and
gambling hence, the enforcement of such offences were part of our
visible patrols in Khayelitsha”.

At a roadblock Saturday evening in Belhar Metro Police officers
arrested seven motorists for drunk driving and issued 29 fines.
Another four motorists were arrested in Bellville South and Atlantis
for the same offence and a further seven drivers were arrested in
Lansdowne, also for drunk driving.

On Saturday evening two suspects were arrested near a night club in
Elsies River for possession of illegal narcotics. Later that night a
suspect was arrested for public violence when Metro Police officers
had to defuse a volatile situation where about 20 men were involved in
a fight outside one of the night clubs.

On Sunday afternoon, 16 motorists were arrested in Manenberg for
driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Metro Police will continue with these types of operations in order to
address drug-related crimes, drunk driving and to police the City’s
by-laws. Patrols around the city’s night clubs will be increased, in
our preparation for the festive season,” said Faro.
