I think that instead of simply canning the Festival it would be good for those of us who have not enjoyed (hated) it in the past, to put together some ideas of what we would like for a festival. How about a REAL festival of the arts? Such as proper exhibitions of art, book launches and poetry readings, excellent performing arts, especially plays, intimate and interesting musical performances - a festival where the businesses in Obs also chip in to create a vibe that is truly exciting and enriching. Also, how about creating a festival that delivers on the original and now forgotten mandate that any profits made go to the improvement and cultural enrichment of the neighbourhood. I know that I would be prepared to meet with interested parties to formulate such a vision and present it to the OCA as guidelines for a festival that reflects the wishes of Observatorians, supports the artists across the spectrum living and or working in Obs, and boosts the image of Obs as a culturally rich and interesting neighbourhood rather than a crime-ridden club land.
Come on guys, lets mobilize rather than gripe! I am sure we can all contribute great ideas and help facilitate a successful festival in 2011.
