We can probably learn from recent incidents in Mowbray/Rondebosch, which may
spread to our district. See below:

Below please find a message from the Annerley Rd resident whose bag was
stolen on Friday.

Please keep a look out for the items in your gardens, outside planters,
hedges etc.

"Thanks so much, I got my bag back but contents all gone. I would be very
grateful if anyone should find my ID book, drivers licence, reading glasses
(black and white frame), keys and security access disc on MRC lanyard and
black leather purse. It seems that the thief must have walked down Annerley
road turned L into Kingston and thrown the bag over the fence into the
property on corner of Park and Kingston. This must have happened within a
very short period on Friday am as our garage door was open while builder
drove into our property and for a short while after. I either left my bag in
car unlocked which I think is unlikely, or I left it on table in hallway
which means the thief came right into the house - do people cruise the
streets looking for opportunities to steal?"

And from Jonathan Hobday:

"While there is good news on contact crimes in our precinct during the week
October 18-24 - only one reported and that involved people from Langa who
crashed their car in Mowbray - there is concern about an uptick in
property-related crimes.
Residential burglaries went up from two to three compared to the previous
year and business break-ins from nought to one, while thefts from cars was
up from five to six.
Most reported cases of crime in the precinct during the week took place in
Sector One - 22 out of a total of 32 cases - and third of all crimes
happened at night. Bad days were Saturday and Wednesday. Problem areas were
the Liesbeek NHW area and Little Mowbray NHW area.
Two cars were stolen - one in John St in Sector One and the other from the
Red Cross Hospital car-park, the latter a notorious hunting-ground for
car-thieves in spite of extensive security.
A notable feature of crime this last week has been an apparent return of the
Plasma TV gang. Bruegels was hit on Saturday night and a flat in Bognor
Road, Rosebank, was also relieved of its TV screen on Wednesday.
Police suspect that a gang of coloured males using in a light-coloured
(light blue?), fairly-old Toyota Corolla hatch-back may be responsible for
the raids (and others). The GSCID also suspects that this gang is
responsible for raids on students in Obs, taking laptops and cellphones,
etc. Be on the lookout and report to police if you see such a car occupied
by suspicious-looking people.
Another suspicious element is a coloured "handyman" who has been given work
in both Strubens Road and Alma Road and is thought to be a serial pilferer.
He often wears a keffiyeh. Residents should be circumspect about using
anyone matching this description.
Residents should also remain vigilant about their own personal security:
police on patrol in the area say they constantly encounter instances of
gates and doors being left open, valuables left on car sets in full view,
cars left unlocked, etc etc. Please help to beat the criminals by being more
careful and alert.
This has also been a week when no arrests were made - so all these crooks
are still out there!
To deal with the situation, the Mowbray police will be doing their best to
maintain two vans patrolling in all sectors 24/7 and the patrollers will be
conducting more random stop-and-search exercises when they see strangers or
strange cars in the streets.

Take care,
