THE FISHING SEASON This is the time of year when windows are open and villains use poles with strings and hooks. They hook laptops or other valuable off tables and drag them close to the window, where they can grab them. You have maybe seen the TV ad where the keys are hooked by a fisherman?
ROBBERS POSING AS POLICE A gang of four men - one black and three coloured - armed with a gun recently talked their way into a house in Rondebosch and stole jewellery and other items from the elderly occupant of the house. One of the men posed as a policeman, complete with bulletproof vest, clearly marked "POLICE", and holding an official-looking dossier. I have now heard that it has just happened in Claremont as well. They apparently drive a white Tazz or Conquest. You will remember the very unpleasant incident in Obs 3 years ago when rapists obtained entry by posing as Police. DON'T ALLOW ANYONE DRESSED AS A POLICEMAN INTO YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT VIEWING PROPER POLICE ID. If necessary, phone the Police Station to confirm their identity. HOUSEBREAKINGS AND EMPTY HOUSES Now is the time of year that people go on holiday and houses are left empty. Reports of housebreakings at empty houses are coming in and that mostly elderly people have been targeted lately. Security complexes have not been exempt. Another thing that is prevalent is the amount of jewellery that is being stolen. Pre World Cup it was definitely flat screen TV's. Someone is providing a market for this jewellery. A Gold for Cash shop has opened in Rondebosch (back of Pick n Pay Centre) and opposite Claremont Police in Lansdowne Rd. SAPS do check these places regularly - please let us know of any others close by. Also if you have a robbery remember to check sites like Gumtree and Bid or Buy to maybe recover your goods.
