We were walking back from the cactus. Just before we got to the circus tent I noticed a black man in a golf shirt walking quickly about 20 meters behind me. Was slightly wary, and kept an idea of where he was. He drew up alongside and started saying something. Almost immediately he grabbed my arm and I turned towards him quickly.
He was a dark black man about 5'8" (175cm) wearing a navy golf shirt with thin white horizontal stripes and a red collar. Don't know what trousers. Dark. He said, "You ran into the wrong person today." (wonder where he got that line.) He sounded South African, I reckon. I saw a curved knife with a dark blade about three inches long. "Give me your wallet." But before I could even consider options I had torn away - ripping the arm off my t-shirt (thank f*&^ it was really old and tore easily) - and was running and telling Aparna to run. Over my shoulder I saw him simply turn and walk away without giving chase. Called the SAPS car immediately while still heading away and it arrived in about three minutes. We gave a description and they went after him (after asking if we were ok, bless'em.). Be very cautious by the river. 35 years in SA and this was my first attempted mugging.
