It’s around 8.30 pm – Sat 16 Apr 2011. I am walking from Pick ‘n Pay back to my car. On exiting from the PnP centre, I hear a hellish grinding sound and a car engine revving wildly. Car is shooting sparks from its chassy it seems….. My uh-oh needle flies off into the red and the warning light in my head begins flashing…..
It occurs to me in the midst of the noise, shouting, sparks flying and car engine frantically revving that a large, beautiful, very expensive white Mercedes is determinedly reversing out of a disabled bay near the PnP entrance in spite of a clamped wheel. The guy is clearly in an urgent hurry to offload his wheel clamp and move off….. Damage to this beautiful car appears to be of no consequence….. A major scuffle breaks out between PnP security and I-can’t-work-out- who-all….. I see one security guy (in particular) being badly shoved around by a whole group of people. Time to call for assistance so I ask PnP staff to call the SAPS. Who arrive in about 7 minutes from time of phone call. Scuffling continues with lots of screaming, shouting and man-handling of PnP security chaps. The driver in the Merc has fled. Why would anyone who has chosen to park in a bay for the disabled and who can (it would appear) afford to pay the fine be so keen to break a wheel clamp and power out of the PnP parking lot ? Stolen car ? It appeared that some of the people (esp. young coloured woman and a black chap from up-north [I think…] who were screaming and scuffling in the parking lot and very roughly man-handling the security chaps when the SAPS arrived) were in some way ‘linked’ to the now nowhere-to- be-seen Merc(?) Yet no-one was picked up by the police…. ?
