The front page article in today's Argus refers - "City Cops in CCTV
beating" - (there was also extensive covearge on Cape Talk). A
Woodstock club owner was allegedly assaulted by police officers while
handcuffed. When a woman friend of the owner tried to intervene she
was allegedly pepper-sprayed, manhandled and had her skirt torn (she's
a journalist who works for The Big Issue). Let's hope there will be a
proper investigation. I'm all for 'zero-tolerance' when it comes to
clubs that deliberately and repeatedly break the law (I don't know
what the status of thisparticular club is) - but the police must
obviously act within the law themselves. They have a difficult job to
do: one suspects that a lack of proper preparation and training may be
behind recent police excesses (e.g. the recent fatal shooting of an
unarmed protestor in Ficksburg. I hope the new station commander at
Woodstock acts swiftly to restore the image of police under his
command. I am sure the CPF will also take the matter up. We need to
have confidence in the police who serve and protect us.
