Hi David

Thank you for your e-mail and valuable suggestions and comments. I do agree
whole hearted with you that beams are the answer and advocate it to our
residents. We are having a resident's meeting on Wednesday night for the
three roads affected and will share your comments with the residents and try
to ascertain where we can improve our personal security and if we can learn
by past mistakes in order to stop these criminals coming into our area.

Thank you for your concern and support.

Regards
Shirley

May I draw your attention to the issue of the timing from the front door
access to the alarm pad. This delay has a significant effect on how long it
takes for the alarm to be activated when the front door is forced open by
criminals. It is significant what a difference an additional minute or two
makes ! Many residents have particularly asked that the delay is increased
to enable them to get to the alarm pad in good time if it is not situated
at the front door. Please check how long it takes you to deactivate your
alarm and you may need to adjust (decrease ?) the delay according to your
requirements.

I find this confusing. Like quite a few people we turn our alarm on and off
using a remote attached to our car keys as an alternative to our key pad.
Surely the best (but expensive) route is to have beams outside (preferably
hidden). The alarm then goes off before the intruder reaches the door.
LED LIGHTS :
When you leave your premises and set your alarm the LED light outside
immediately comes on indicating that your alarm is activated. In the past
this served as a deterrent to criminals (that your alarm was set) but
unfortunately the crime pattern has changed and it now indicates YOU ARE OUT
and is an open invitation to smash & grab ! If your LED light is in a very
visible position i.e. on the front garage door I would suggest that you
either try to conceal it in one way or another or move it to a less
conspicuous position

Our thinking is different. We try to have our outside beams and visible
little red light on when we are at home and not going outside. When we go to
bed we have the internal beams on as well (except in the bedroom area). We
feel the red light is a deterrent. I think our local nasties watch and know
our movements. They have also probably seen that I talk on a hand held radio
linked to SAPS, our security company and ONW members.

Any comment or ideas very welcome.

Your excellent security emails are much appreciated and I forward portions
relevant to Obs to our residents.

Take care,

David
