Below is an example of how crime reporting is emailed to residents in next
door neighbourhoods.

I believe we need to do the same or better. To do this we need to persuade
SAPS Woodstock to work with us and release the information and someone from
our community to write it up.

Any offers please?

Take care,

David

Dear Residents

1. Alma Rd conviction

Residents may remember the incident in February, when a house-sitter was
confronted by a burglar while on the phone to the home-owner, who was away
in Johannesburg.

SAPS contacted the house-sitter this week, to inform him that a 5 year
prison sentence had been handed down. Below is a synopsis of the incident -
it is the perfect illustration of a community, SAPS and ADT working together
towards a satisfactory outcome.

    a) The home-owner was in Johannesburg on businesss, and phoned her
house-sitter.

While still on the phone to him, he indicated that he had had heard a
noise - she then

heard a crash and shouting and the phone went dead.

   b) She phoned Brooklands Guest House in Surbiton Rd and asked them to
call ADT

and tell that them that it was an emergency. (She couldn't
immediately locate ADT's

number on her phone - now corrected!)

  c) She phoned the opposite neighbour, told her that something was
happening and

to please call someone. SAPS Mowbray was called, as was ADT.

  d) Some unknown ladies also helped the SAPS vehicle find the correct
number, when

they started turning down towards the railway line.

ALMA RD is a very confusing road. It starts on Main Rd, "goes under"
the railway

line, crosses Liesbeek Parkway and then heads up to the Common. It also
frequently

gets confused with ELMA Rd in Rondebosch.

  f) In spite of this all, the response time of both SAPS and ADT was
excellent.

"Luckily yesterday turned out ok - the 30 or so minutes from when the
phone went

dead until my house-sitter was able to phone me back and say he was ok,
were very

very long and hard to endure, given what noises I had heard.

Thanks to everyone who helped out - having a sense of neighbourhood and

community is what makes it bearable for me."

2. Theft of wipers from motor vehicle (Liesbeek Rd)

On Monday, the wipers were stolen from a car parked outside a house in
Liesbeek Rd.

The owner has parked in the street for 8 years without incident.
Hopefully this is not the

start of a new "theft craze", now that most of the brass numbers and
letterbox flaps

have been stolen from our neighbourhood.

3. News from SAPS (Mowbray)

3.1 Volunteers for the Comfort Room

6 residents from the precinct (4 from the RNW area) attended an
intensive,

excellent training course run by a psychologist, who is very
experienced in this

support work, both in the UK and locally, at the Claremont SAPS Trauma
Support

facility. The purpose of these volunteers is to provide initial
support/comfort

after an incident, to those who need it and to direct them to other
services if need be.

They are NOT QUALIFIED COUNSELLORS, so we are calling on the many
qualified

psychologists in Rosebank, to consider offering their OCCASIONAL
services, should

circumstances require this. This would be an occasional debriefing
session for the

volunteers or support for a police officer/trauma victim in certain
instances.

Please contact Jonathan Hobday should you be able to offer your time
on an

      occasional,voluntary basis. [email protected]

3.2 Domestic Workers/Gardeners Workshop

Unfortunately, attendance at this workshop was poor, although the
presentation was

apparently very good. A precis of the top crime prevention tips will
be drawn up and

       circulated.

3.2 Reporting Corruption within the SAPS.

Lt Col Dyers, the station commander of Mowbray SAPS, has urged members
of the public to report any incidents of corruption within SAPS to
the following number:

      080 0701701. For more information see www.psc.gov.za

3.3 Brickbats/Bouquets for SAPS

Generally, we enjoy a very good relationship with the Police Stations
in our cluster viz

Claremont, Rondebosch and Mowbray. There will always be complaints
about

service - please direct them to the Station Commander or to Jonathan
Hobday, who

     Chairs our Community Police Forum.

Those of us who have been involved in the RNW for years have seen a
huge

improvement since we first started 20 years ago. We have many new
vehicles (we

used to have about 2 old skedonks - one of which seemed to be
permanently in for

repairs), the event of Visible Policing has resulted in drastically
improved response

time and a sense of security in the neighbourhood as the vehicles are on
patrol 24/7

and even case numbers are now speedily despatched via sms.

2 of the RNW volunteers on the above mentioned course, were there
SPECIFICALLY

as a result of incredible SAPS kindness after a case of fraud (where
the bank was not especially interested) and a case of bag theft at a
large chain store, where there was

NO support given by store security.

Thank you's - either direct, or again via Jonathan, are always hugely
appreciated.

Wheelie Bin Collection

I have just received the following from our Councillor.

"The city has a contingency plan for the collection of refuse. We will be
working all night Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday to make sure the
backlog has been collected. Please keep your black bins outside until 9pm if
not collected.

Feel free to contact me any time this weekend.

With best wishes

Cllr Matthew Kempthorne

Ward councillor : Ward 58

Office 021 794 2493 / Cell 084 681 0012

PLEASE BE VIGILANT - our neighbours to the south of the Common (RCID) have
had a recent surge of incidents - mainly "smash and grabs" - vehicles of the
smarter variety, have been involved.

best wishes
