ADT Security arrests 5 members of Housebreaking gang in Upper Claremont

Five men were arrested and charged with housebreaking and theft after an
impromptu operation by ADT Armed Response Officers lead to their capture in
Claremont on Wednesday, 19 October 2011.

ADT Armed Response Officer Jan Matli was called out to an alarm activation in
Riviera Road at 13:00pm yesterday where he found two male suspects on the
premises, allegedly with stolen items in their possession.

After Officer Matli's back up, ADT Officers Peter Ngoetjana and Victor
Dhludhlu, Claude Maree and supervisor Denzil Witbooi arrived, the Claremont
South African Police Service was notified of the situation and the two men were
apprehended.

As they waited, one of the suspect's cell phones rang and he admitted to the
Officers that it was his "boss" calling. Officer Dhludhlu instructed him not to
admit that they had been arrested. The boss wanted to know why there were ADT
patrol cars on the scene but the suspect told him that they were in hiding with
the goods and were waiting for ADT to leave before coming out.

While some of the ADT Officers pretended to leave the scene, all of them in
fact remained with the suspects who informed them that the second call from
their boss instructed them to hide the goods and meet him and three accomplices
at a petrol station in Main Road, Claremont where they would be waiting in a
white Fiat Uno.

Officers Dhludhlu took the suspect's cell phone and drove to the petrol station
followed by Officer Maree where they saw the vehicle, with its occupants,
waiting in the forecourt.

"The suspects became uneasy and tried to flee the scene but we blocked their
exit with our patrol cars," Officer Dhludhlu explains.

The men were instructed to get out of the vehicle and were apprehended
immediately.

Claremont SAPS arrived at the station at this time and Officer Dhludhlu
confirmed the link between the five men when he pressed the redial button on
the cell phone he had taken from the suspect in Riviera Road, and the phone
rang in the pocket of one of the suspects they had just apprehended.

The stolen goods were recovered and the five men were arrested and taken to
Claremont Police station.

"The Officers' decisive action deserves praise and is a great example of how
fast response times, quick thinking and effective teamwork between ADT and the
South African Police Services can be," says Rob Dale, Managing Director of ADT
Security Western Cape.
