Last night SAPS failed to pitch up at our Observatory Community Police Sub
Forum meeting ( Sector 1 ) with no explanation. This is part of a trend.
They have been arriving later and later at our meetings.

* I look back warmly to the days when we carried out foot patrols
together with the Police in the company of some admirable SAPS Sector
Commanders. It is some years since I have seen a SAPS Policeman patrolling
on foot in Obs.

* We have not had a Sector Commander for 3 months. When our Sector
Commander was injured we were told that a stand-in would be appointed. It
has not happened.

* We used to have a Lieutenant Colonel as our Sector Commander. Now we
are supposed to have a constable but in practice we have nobody.

* If truth be told, I feel that SAPS contribute little to our crime
fighting. Their crime figures are totally concealed from the committee and
we are only told that a category of crime type has gone up or down. Would
you try and run a business without any figures to tell you how you are
performing?

I have the perception that our crime has improved but no figures to prove
it. I believe that the improvement comes almost totally from our own efforts
and at our own cost, with almost no help from SAPS. I think the OBSID and
the Obs Neighbourhood Watch have performed well against a back ground of
marked improvement from the City and the Province.

Take care,

David
