Hi Our weekly crime reports are compiled by volunteers who try to glean whatever information they can from whatever sources they can to try to give us a better picture of what crime is happening in Obs than we otherwise would get. This is necessary because as everyone knows, we get no information from SAPS except when they reveal their crime stats a year in arrears and at a very high level, not very useful at all to us who are trying to bring down crime in our area on an ongoing basis.
Please remember the weekly crime report is not an official document. It's just a compilation of reports that may or may not have reported to SAPS. We obviously don't have a capacity to go an investigate every incident that is reported so we cannot independently verify the accuracy of every report. If someone reports their battery stolen, we assume that their battery was in fact stolen. Our system is premised on good faith and goodwill. So we use the following sources: - the Obs Safety contractor's (currently VS) weekly incident reports - these are reports of incidents that the safety officers themselves were involved in. - any information that may be shared - reports by Obs residents to the google groups like this one - telephonic, verbal or written feedback to various members of Obsid - any other source of information that we may come across So unless one of the volunteers was reading the paper the day this incident was reported, the report would not have filtered through to us. We don't get info from SAPS, and the VS guys weren't involved, so there would have been no conduit of information for us to know about this - until it was reported by an Obs resident on this group. The more direct reporting by Obs residents - the better a picture of crime we can build.
